Visa vs Mastercard Casino Deposits: What Actually Differs

Two blank payment cards, one navy and one gold, lying side by side, with two stacks of red and black casino chips on a green felt casino table

A Visa vs Mastercard casino deposit works the same way on the way in. Both networks give online gambling the same merchant code, and your own bank decides whether to approve the payment and what to charge for it. The real split is on the way out, where each network has its own rule for sending winnings to a card.

I read both rulebooks to write this, the public Visa rules dated April 18, 2026 and the Mastercard Rules dated June 2, 2026, plus the manuals that sit behind them. Most of what follows comes straight from those pages, which is why it looks different from the usual list of card casinos. If you only want the method pages, we have separate guides to Visa casinos and Mastercard casinos.

  • Which is better for deposits: Neither. Both use code 7995 for online gambling, and your bank makes the call on approval and fees.
  • Which is better for withdrawals: Visa has the clearer rule, with one approved way to send winnings to a card and a 30-minute standard for banks that take part in Fast Funds.
  • Do fees differ: No. Cash advance fees are set by the bank that issued the card, never by Visa or Mastercard.
  • Debit or credit: Debit. A credit card deposit can be charged as a cash advance, at the greater of $10 or 5% on most big US cards.
  • Why deposits get declined: Your bank sees the gambling code and says no. Switching from Visa to Mastercard at the same bank won’t change that.
  • Cards or crypto: Cards protect you against charges you didn’t make. A Bitcoin payment can’t be reversed.

Visa vs Mastercard at a Glance

Here is the Visa vs Mastercard casino deposit and withdrawal comparison in one table. Every row comes from the networks’ own published rules, so it describes what a casino and a bank are allowed to do with your card, and what they have to do.

What matters Visa Mastercard
Code for online gambling MCC 7995, on every transaction the casino takes MCC 7995, unless the casino is registered for a US code
Code for a licensed US online casino MCC 7801, US Region only MCC 7801, U.S. Region only
How winnings reach your card Original Credit Transaction, the only method allowed Gaming Payment Transaction. A refund can’t carry winnings
Speed standard for payouts Fast Funds: within 30 minutes, or 60 seconds for a US domestic payout. Other banks have 2 business days to post it Mastercard Send: “typically within seconds”, with posting left to your bank. The receiving bank’s deadline is six business days
Winnings to a prepaid card Allowed in the US under a Visa-approved program Not as a payout in the US or Canada. A value load needs the issuer’s consent
Cover for charges you didn’t make The issuer must limit your liability to zero Zero Liability, if you took reasonable care of the card
Extra check at the cashier Visa Secure Mastercard Identity Check
Cash advance fee on a credit card Set by your bank Set by your bank
Size of the network 200+ countries and territories, 175 million+ merchant locations Over 200 countries and territories

The short version of any Visa vs Mastercard casino deposit comparison is that the deposit rules match and the payout rules don’t. That’s the part I found missing from other comparisons, because most of them look at the two logos, note that both are accepted at the cashier, and stop there without opening either rulebook.

Visa vs Mastercard by the Numbers

  • Gambling code: 7995, the merchant category code both Visa and Mastercard use for online gambling.
  • US casino code: 7801, reserved by both networks for licensed online casinos in the US.
  • Visa payout standard: 30 minutes under Fast Funds, 60 seconds for a US domestic payout, and 2 business days for banks outside the service.
  • Cash advance fee: the greater of $10 or 5% at most of the seven big US issuers the CFPB reviewed in December 2024.
  • Cash advance interest: 30% APR was the most common rate in those agreements, charged from day one.
  • Mastercard payout standard: “typically within seconds” by Mastercard’s own description, with six business days as the deadline for the receiving bank.
  • Refund window: 90 days, the period in which a Mastercard casino can refund a deposit you never played with.
  • Visa’s reach: about 14,500 financial institutions and 329 billion transactions in the 12 months to September 30, 2025.
  • Mastercard’s reach: over 143 billion transactions a year, by its own count.

How Visa and Mastercard Code a Casino Deposit

Visa and Mastercard both label an online casino deposit with merchant category code 7995, the four-digit tag that tells your bank what kind of business took the payment. Visa’s manual says an online gambling merchant must use 7995 for all transactions, even if gambling isn’t its main business. Mastercard defines the same code as any transaction involving the placing of a wager or the purchase of chips or other value usable for gambling.

That code is the whole story behind most card problems. Your bank reads it before it approves anything, and its own policy decides what happens next. The networks carry the payment. They don’t issue your card, set your fees or decide if you can gamble with it.

Visa vs Mastercard casino deposit flow from the cashier to the card network and the bank that approves it
One deposit, three decisions: the casino codes it, the network carries it, your bank approves or declines it.

What does a licensed US casino look like to your bank?

Both networks keep a separate code for the legal US market. MCC 7801 is for licensed online casinos in the US, with 7800 for state lotteries and 7802 for licensed horse and dog racing. Visa describes 7801 merchants as licensed by a US government entity and registered with Visa to sell virtual gambling chips or offer online gambling.

Mastercard spells out what it takes to get that code. The casino’s payment processor has to send Mastercard a copy of the state or tribal license, plus a certificate from an independent third party showing that the site has effective age and location verification. A casino without that registration is coded 7995 like everyone else.

Are sweepstakes casinos coded as gambling?

On Visa they can be. The April 2026 edition of Visa’s merchant manual lists Sweepstakes among the business types under code 7995, next to Bingo parlors and raffle tickets. So a Gold Coin purchase at one of the sweepstakes casinos we review could reach your bank looking like a casino deposit, and the bank may treat it the same way.

What the cashier has to tell you

Both rulebooks make the casino warn you before it takes your card. Visa’s wording is that internet gambling “may be illegal in the jurisdiction in which you are located; if so, you are not authorized to use your payment card to complete this transaction.” Mastercard wants a notice that internet gambling may not be lawful in some jurisdictions, including the United States, shown before the site asks for your card details.

Visa also requires an online gambling merchant to hold a valid license or other appropriate authority to operate. If a cashier shows neither warning, that tells you something about who is processing the payment.

Visa vs Mastercard for Casino Withdrawals

Casino withdrawals are where Visa and Mastercard part ways, because each network has its own rule for sending winnings to a card. A deposit is a purchase, but a payout isn’t a refund on either network, which is how a casino can take both cards at the cashier and still pay out to only one of them.

How casino winnings return to a Visa card and to a Mastercard, step by step
Visa allows one way back to the card. Mastercard uses its own payout transaction and bars refunds for winnings.

How does a Visa casino withdrawal work?

Visa allows exactly one route. A gambling merchant must only disburse gambling winnings to a cardholder using an Original Credit Transaction, which is Visa’s push payment and the engine behind Visa Direct. The rule spells out that cash, checks and ordinary credits to the card aren’t allowed. Visa tidied this rule up in its April 18, 2026 edition, and in Europe the payout has to go to the same card that placed the winning bet.

Speed then depends on your bank. If it takes part in Fast Funds, it must make the money available within 30 minutes of approving the payout, or within 60 seconds for a domestic payout in the US. A bank outside the service has 2 business days to post it. In Canada the fast service covers debit and reloadable prepaid cards, and a payout to a credit card is posted as a payment against your balance.

How does a Mastercard casino withdrawal work?

Mastercard bans the shortcut. A merchant must not use a refund to credit winnings to a Mastercard or Maestro account. Winnings have to travel as a Gaming Payment Transaction under the Mastercard Gaming and Gambling Payments Program, and the processor has to register the casino and hold a copy of its license first.

On speed, Mastercard lists gambling and gaming winnings among the payouts its Mastercard Send platform handles, and says Send moves funds to recipients “typically within seconds”. The small print is that the actual posting time depends on the receiving bank, and Mastercard’s Chargeback Guide sets the outer limit at six business days. Visa gives the bank 2 business days, so on paper a slow Mastercard payout can run longer.

Where can a casino pay out to a Mastercard?

The public rulebooks I read don’t give a country list. They refer banks and processors to the program’s own standards, and a processor’s guide to the program describes it as covering domestic payouts and cross-border ones where permitted. The rules do show it in use well beyond Europe. In Nigeria and 26 other African countries, for example, a casino may refund unused gambling value to a Maestro card, but winnings must go out as a Gaming Payment Transaction.

BitStarz shows how that looks from the casino’s side. Its terms say it pays out by Original Credit Transfer on Visa and by Payment Transfer on Mastercard, only to cards issued in a supported country, and that banks may still block or reject the payout at their own discretion. So a missing Mastercard withdrawal button is more likely about where your card was issued than about the casino cutting corners.

Deposits you never played with

There’s one exception worth knowing. If you deposit with a Mastercard and change your mind before you bet, the casino can refund that money to the card for up to 90 days, because unused funds aren’t winnings. I’d still withdraw to the method the cashier offers first. It’s quicker than arguing about which rule applies.

Prepaid cards are the awkward case

Mastercard’s US and Canada rules say a payout must not be processed to a prepaid card for gambling winnings. A casino can load value onto one only if the card’s issuer agrees and the load stays off Mastercard’s network. Visa is looser in the US, where winnings can go to a prepaid card under a program Visa has approved. Our guide to how to withdraw casino winnings covers the other payout methods in detail.

Credit or Debit: The Cash Advance Fee on a Casino Deposit

A credit card casino deposit costs the same on Visa and Mastercard, because the cash advance fee comes from the bank that issued the card. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the US consumer finance regulator, looked at agreements from seven of the top card issuers in December 2024. Each one listed online gambling or legal wagers as a cash advance.

The price is steep for small deposits. Most of those issuers charge the greater of $10 or 5%, so someone wagering $20 could pay the same $10 fee as on a $200 cash withdrawal at an ATM. Interest starts on day one, and the most common cash advance rate in those agreements was 30% APR, even for people who clear their balance every month.

Which banks treat a casino deposit as a cash advance?

The CFPB named names, and they include some of the biggest card issuers in the US. I’ve added one Canadian agreement that I checked myself.

Card issuer How its agreement treats gambling
Chase Lists online gambling transactions as cash advances
Citi Classifies legal wagers as cash advances
Capital One Classifies legal wagers as cash advances
Bank of America Lists bets as cash equivalents and says it may decline internet gambling
Wells Fargo Lists bets as cash equivalents and says it may decline internet gambling
TD in Canada Treats casino gaming chips, betting and cryptocurrency as cash-like, charged as a cash advance

The regulator’s own example is a $400 cash advance held for one month at 30% APR, which costs $10 in interest on top of a $20 fee. Across everything, major US issuers charged $717 million in fees on $3.6 billion of cash advances in 2022, about $1 for every $19.

Why does a debit card avoid the fee?

A debit card spends your own money, so there is no advance to charge for. The bank can still decline the payment when it sees the gambling code, but it can’t add cash advance interest to money that was already yours. Visa adds a technical reason for the fee on credit. In the US and Canada, an online gambling payment has to carry Visa’s quasi-cash indicator, a flag that marks it as cash-like spending.

Where are credit cards banned for gambling?

Some regulators have taken the choice away, and the bans apply to both networks alike. Our US gambling laws guide covers what each state allows.

Market Rule for credit cards
Great Britain Gambling businesses can’t accept credit cards, in force since April 14, 2020
Australia Online and phone betting operators can’t accept credit cards or digital currency, since June 11, 2024
United States Left to states and operators. DraftKings stopped taking credit cards for its US sportsbook and casino on August 25, 2025
Canada DraftKings takes Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards. Banks such as TD charge credit as a cash advance

DraftKings said it made the US change to help customers avoid cash advance fees and higher interest rates. If you play in Ontario, our DraftKings Ontario review covers its cashier. Our casino payment fees guide lists what the other methods cost.

Why a Visa or Mastercard Casino Deposit Gets Declined

A declined casino deposit is almost always your bank’s decision, and it reads the same gambling code on a Visa as on a Mastercard. The Federal Reserve’s guide to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 explains why cards are the easiest payment to block. Card systems are the only ones with a merchant and transaction coding framework that lets a bank identify and stop a payment while it’s being processed.

That law targets unlawful internet gambling, but a bank’s filter doesn’t have to be that precise, and a bank that blocks the gambling code blocks it for a licensed casino as well as an unlicensed one, which is why legal operators have to warn their own customers about declines. DraftKings tells its own US customers that some banks do not allow deposits for gambling or sports betting, and suggests online banking, PayPal or Venmo instead. This is a licensed operator describing declines on legal bets.

Will switching from Visa to Mastercard fix a decline?

Only if the second card comes from a different bank. The block lives in the issuer’s policy, so two cards from one bank tend to fail together. Visa’s rules do tell issuers to evaluate each transaction instead of blocking in a wholesale manner, with exceptions for fraud and for local law, so it’s no guarantee that a payment goes through.

The card also has to be yours. DraftKings accepts only a deposit method that belongs to you and matches the name on your account, and you should expect the same at any licensed casino. Our casino deposit methods guide compares the alternatives, and our guide to declined casino deposits walks through the fixes.

Is Visa or Mastercard Safer for Online Gambling?

Visa and Mastercard both protect you against charges you didn’t make, and neither will get your losses back. Visa’s rule is that an issuer must limit a cardholder’s liability to zero once you report an unauthorized transaction. Mastercard’s Zero Liability promise says the bank that issued your card won’t hold you responsible, as long as you took reasonable care of the card and reported the problem promptly.

One gap matters for casino players. Visa’s protection doesn’t apply to anonymous prepaid cards, the kind you buy at a store and never register. If you fund a casino account with one and the number is stolen, you’re on your own.

What is the extra code at the cashier?

That step is 3-D Secure, the check where your bank sends a code or asks you to approve the payment in its app. Visa calls its version Visa Secure and Mastercard calls its version Mastercard Identity Check. They are the same standard under two names. Mastercard goes one step further for gambling and requires every online gambling payment to carry authentication data such as the card’s security code.

Can you dispute a casino deposit?

You can dispute a payment you didn’t make on either network. A dispute over a deposit you did make is much narrower, and Mastercard puts that in writing. For gambling purchases, its Chargeback Guide allows a chargeback only when the value you bought failed to appear in your casino account.

The same guide says chargeback rights are not available for refunds, withdrawals or transfer requests, for terms and conditions or account access, or for winnings, gains or losses. A casino can also answer a dispute by showing that the same card later received a gambling payout nobody disputed. So a chargeback won’t recover a losing session or hurry a slow withdrawal, and it isn’t meant for a deposit you went on to play with.

Visa’s public rules say less about gambling disputes, and I found one line that singles it out. For online payments at codes 7995, 7801 and 7802, a bank can raise a fraud dispute whatever electronic commerce indicator the payment carried. If a charge wasn’t yours, tell your bank quickly, on either card.

The card protects the payment, the license protects the play

None of this makes a bad casino safe. The card protects the payment, and the license protects the play, so check both. Our casino payment methods guide compares every method we cover.

Crypto vs Card Casino Deposits

Crypto vs card casino deposits comes down to one trade. A card gives you protection and a paper trail, while crypto skips your bank and leaves you nothing to fall back on. A Bitcoin transaction can’t be reversed. It can only be refunded by whoever received it, and at an offshore casino that means asking nicely.

What matters Visa or Mastercard Crypto
If the payment wasn’t yours Your bank limits your liability to zero A Bitcoin payment can’t be reversed
How your bank sees it Gambling, code 7995 Buying crypto with a card is code 6051, which banks class as cash-like
Time to arrive Approved at the cashier when your bank says yes New Bitcoin blocks arrive about every 10 minutes
Getting paid Visa or Mastercard payout rules, then your bank’s timing Sent to your own wallet by the casino
Where it’s banned Credit cards for gambling in Great Britain and for online betting in Australia Digital currency for online betting in Australia

Can you buy crypto with a card inside a casino?

Yes, at casinos that build a crypto seller into the cashier. MetaWin takes Visa, Mastercard and Maestro through MoonPay, which turns your money into crypto automatically. MetaWin’s own FAQ calls it the easiest option for beginners, because it works like any online payment. Withdrawals don’t come back the same way. They go to your wallet.

Don’t expect it to hide the deposit from your bank. Visa’s manual says that loading a gambling wallet through a crypto seller must use code 7995 and not 6051, because the point of the payment is to gamble. Even a plain crypto purchase can cost you on credit. The CFPB lists buying cryptocurrency among the transactions that can trigger a cash advance fee, and TD’s agreement names it outright.

Our crypto casinos guide ranks the sites, and our guide to how to deposit crypto at a casino covers wallets and networks step by step.

Visa and Mastercard at Casinos We Review

Card acceptance varies more by casino than by network, so here is what seven casinos we review say about Visa and Mastercard in their own terms and help pages.

Casino Cards it names What its own pages say
BitStarz Visa, Mastercard Pays out to cards, by Original Credit Transfer on Visa and Payment Transfer on Mastercard, for cards issued in a supported country
BC.Game Visa, Mastercard Card withdrawals where available, tied to deposit method rules and local issuer policies
Stake Visa, Mastercard Card deposits in selected local currencies
Duelbits Visa, Mastercard in Europe and Japan Deposits only, through a third-party crypto seller. All withdrawals are in crypto
Shuffle Visa, Mastercard Buy Crypto through MoonPay and Swapped, which charge their own fees and run their own identity checks
MetaWin Visa, Mastercard, Maestro Through MoonPay, converted to crypto automatically. Withdrawals go to your wallet
DraftKings in Canada Visa, Mastercard Credit and debit cards for sportsbook and casino deposits

The pattern is clear enough. Crypto casinos mostly take a card as a way to buy crypto, so the money comes back as crypto, and the two that pay out to cards both attach conditions. Our BitStarz review and Stake review cover each cashier in full.

Card deposit pros
Zero liability for charges you didn't make
No extra account to open
Winnings can return to the card
Card deposit cons
Credit cards can trigger cash advance fees
Banks can decline the gambling code
Payout options vary by network

Which Card Should You Use for a Casino Deposit?

Use the debit card you already have, Visa or Mastercard, and check the withdrawal page before you deposit. On a Visa vs Mastercard casino deposit the logo won’t change your approval odds or your fees, because both of those belong to your bank, but it can change whether your winnings are allowed back onto the same card.

  • You want winnings back on the card: Visa has the edge. Its rules give casinos one approved payout method and give your bank a 30-minute standard under Fast Funds.
  • You only have a credit card: Read your card agreement for the words cash advance first. If they’re there, expect the greater of $10 or 5% on most big US cards.
  • Your bank keeps declining: A second card from the same bank won’t help. Try a card from another bank, or a method that doesn’t use card codes.
  • You play at crypto casinos: A card works through a built-in crypto seller, but your bank can still see a gambling payment.
  • You use prepaid cards: Treat them as deposit-only. Mastercard bars payouts to prepaid cards in the US and Canada.

These are the networks’ global rules, and regions edit them, as the US-only casino code and the African refund rule show. Wherever you are, the issuing bank has the last word, so its terms are the ones to read. If speed is your priority, our fast withdrawal casinos page ranks sites by how quickly they pay.

Responsible Gambling

Responsible Gambling starts with how you pay, and a credit card is the riskiest way to fund a casino account because the money isn’t yours yet. Great Britain has banned it, Australia bars it for online betting, and US banks charge extra for it. A debit card keeps you inside what you have.

Set a deposit limit in the cashier before your first payment, and ask your bank if it offers a block on gambling transactions if you want a harder stop. If gambling has stopped being fun, call or text 1-800-MY-RESET, the National Problem Gambling Helpline in the US. Our Responsible Gambling guide has more tools and support services.

Visa vs Mastercard Casino Deposit FAQ

Is Visa or Mastercard better for casino deposits?
Toggle answer

Neither is better for deposits. Visa and Mastercard both code online gambling as 7995, and the bank that issued your card decides whether to approve it and what to charge. Pick the card from the bank with the friendlier gambling policy.

Is Visa or Mastercard better for casino withdrawals?
Toggle answer

Visa has the clearer rule. Casinos must pay winnings to a Visa card as an Original Credit Transaction, and banks in Fast Funds must release the money within 30 minutes. Mastercard uses a separate payout transaction, and its deadline for the receiving bank is six business days.

Why was my Visa or Mastercard casino deposit declined?
Toggle answer

Your bank most likely blocked it. Both networks tag online gambling with a merchant code, and banks use that code to identify and stop payments. A second card from the same bank tends to fail too, so try a different bank or another payment method.

Do casino deposits count as a cash advance?
Toggle answer

On a credit card they can. The CFPB found that seven top US issuers list online gambling or legal wagers as cash advances, with most charging the greater of $10 or 5% plus interest from day one. Debit card deposits are not cash advances.

Can you use a credit card at an online casino?
Toggle answer

It depends on where you play. Great Britain bans credit cards for gambling, Australia bans them for online betting, and DraftKings stopped taking them in the US on August 25, 2025. Where they are accepted, your bank may charge the deposit as a cash advance.

Does Mastercard block gambling transactions?
Toggle answer

The Mastercard rules allow gambling payments. They require casinos to be registered and coded correctly, and to warn you that internet gambling may not be lawful where you live. The bank that issued your Mastercard decides whether to approve each payment.

Is crypto better than a card for casino deposits?
Toggle answer

Crypto skips your bank, but it has no safety net. A Bitcoin transaction cannot be reversed, while Visa and Mastercard both limit your liability for charges you did not make. Cards suit licensed casinos, and crypto suits players who accept that risk.

Can I use a prepaid Visa or Mastercard at a casino?
Toggle answer

You can deposit with one if the casino and the card allow gambling. Getting paid is harder. Mastercard bars payouts to prepaid cards in the US and Canada, and Visa only allows them in the US under a program it has approved.
