Best Casinos in Connecticut: Mohegan Sun, Foxwoods and the Casinos Inside Them
The best casinos in Connecticut are the only two there are, and they happen to be two of the biggest casino resorts in the country. Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods sit about 15 minutes apart by car in the woods of southeastern Connecticut, each one owned by a tribal nation, each one with thousands of slot machines, hotel towers, big concert venues and a sportsbook. There’s no third casino anywhere else in the state.
So this list is really a head-to-head, plus a tour of the separate casinos inside each resort. I’ve compared them on the state’s own slot figures, table counts, rooms, age rules and what else there is to do, and I’ve added the three big casinos just over the state line for anyone living near the Massachusetts or Rhode Island border. Both floors are 21 and over, both are non-smoking inside, and neither one feels small on a Saturday night. Our Connecticut gambling guide covers the law behind all of it.
Before You Head Out, Try Connecticut's Two Licensed Casino Apps
Connecticut licenses exactly two online casinos, and each one is tied to a casino on this page. The Department of Consumer Protection said in its March 14, 2025 release that FanDuel and DraftKings are the only two platforms licensed to accept iCasino wagers, affiliated with Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods respectively. Online casino play went live in October 2021 under Public Act 21-23, which our US gambling law guide explains in full.
That makes the choice simple. Pick the app that matches the resort you’d actually drive to, because that is where your rewards end up, and if you split your nights between the two resorts anyway, there’s nothing to stop you holding an account on each app and using whichever one fits the trip you’re planning. Bonus offers change often, so check them on the operator’s own site.
DraftKings Casino
DraftKings Casino is the Foxwoods and Mashantucket Pequot side of the market. You need to be 21 and physically inside Connecticut, and one DraftKings account and login covers the sportsbook, fantasy and the casino.
Foxwoods says the app carries 300-plus casino games, the largest selection in Connecticut, including DraftKings originals such as DraftKings Rocket. If you already bet with DraftKings, I’d start here.
Mohegan Sun Online Casino by FanDuel
The Mohegan Sun Online Casino runs through FanDuel, so the app carries Mohegan Sun’s name and FanDuel handles the support. Like DraftKings, it’s 21 and over and only works inside the state.
The perk is the link to Momentum, Mohegan Sun’s rewards card. Linked members earn rewards and status points on eligible online play and spend them at the resort, which I think is the neatest crossover of the two apps.
The Best Casinos in Connecticut at a Glance
Here are the best casinos in Connecticut side by side. The first slot and table counts are each casino’s own current figures. The state column is the average number of machines in operation in August 2023, from the most recent monthly slot summaries the Department of Consumer Protection has posted.
| Casino | Where | Owned by | Slots | State slot count, Aug 2023 | Slot payout, Aug 2023 | Tables | Hotel rooms | Opened |
| Mohegan Sun | Uncasville | Mohegan Tribe | Nearly 4,000 | 3,525 | 91.71% | 300+ | 1,563 | October 12, 1996 |
| Foxwoods Resort Casino | Mashantucket | Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation | Over 3,200 | 3,384 | 92.03% | 175 | 1,900+ | February 15, 1992 |
How I Ranked Two Casinos
With only two to choose from, I ranked them on the gaming floor first, then the rooms, the shows and how easy each one is to reach. Mohegan Sun wins on the floor, with more machines by the state’s count and roughly 300 tables against Foxwoods’ 175. Foxwoods wins on rooms and on sheer sprawl, and if your ideal weekend is more about the spa, the outlets and a show than about how many Blackjack tables are open at midnight, you could easily flip my order. No casino paid to be here.
Connecticut Casinos by the Numbers
- Two casinos: Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods are the only casinos in Connecticut, both on tribal land.
- 3,525 slot machines: Mohegan Sun’s average in operation in August 2023, per the state, against 3,384 at Foxwoods.
- 92.03% payout: what Foxwoods’ Slots paid back in August 2023, a touch above Mohegan Sun’s 91.71%.
- $214.9 million: slot revenue the two tribes paid the state in the year to June 2025, 25% of their slot win.
- 10,000 seats: the size of Mohegan Sun Arena, the biggest room on either property.
- 1,900-plus rooms: Foxwoods’ hotel count across three towers, well ahead of Mohegan Sun’s 1,563.
- Age 21: the minimum for the casino floor at both resorts, though Foxwoods lets you play Bingo at 18.
1. Mohegan Sun
Mohegan Sun is the best casino in Connecticut, and the gaming floor is the reason. It opened on October 12, 1996 on the Mohegan Tribe’s land in Uncasville, and the tribe runs it through its gaming company, Mohegan. It turns 30 this fall, and it still feels like the busier of the two resorts on any night I’ve walked in.
The resort counts nearly 4,000 slot machines, 300-plus Table Games and a 33-table Poker Room across two casinos, with more than 300,000 square feet of gaming. There are 116 Blackjack tables alone, plus 32 Mini-Baccarat tables in Casino of the Earth. The Mohegan Sun FanDuel Sportsbook is open 24/7 inside Casino of the Earth, in front of a 140-foot video wall.
Casino of the Earth and Casino of the Sky
Casino of the Earth covers 180,000 square feet themed on the four seasons, with the Poker Room in the Hall of Lost Tribes and the free Wolf Den stage in the middle of the action. Casino of the Sky adds more than 1,800 Slots and over 90 Table Games under a planetarium dome that Mohegan Sun calls the world’s largest. You have to be 21 even to look at the dome, kids or no kids.
Rooms, Shows and the Arena
Two hotel towers hold 1,563 rooms between them, the original Sky Tower and the 400-room Earth Tower, which opened on November 18, 2016. Mohegan Sun Arena seats 10,000, the Cabaret Theatre seats 400 and the free Wolf Den stage seats 350, so there’s a show at almost every price. I’d come here for a big concert and stay for the tables, and I’d eat before the show, because when a sold-out arena empties onto the casino floor on a Saturday night, every restaurant and every Blackjack table in the building fills up at the same moment.
2. Foxwoods Resort Casino
Foxwoods Resort Casino is the one to pick for a longer stay. The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation owns and runs it on its reservation at Mashantucket, and it opened as a casino on February 15, 1992, after starting life as a Bingo hall on July 5, 1986. The tribe says it has hosted more than 330 million visitors since.
The resort lists over 3,200 Slots and 175 Table Games in 22 variations, spread over four casino floors, from Blackjack, Craps and Roulette to Pai Gow, and the Slots run 24/7. You can play a machine for anything from a cent to $100. The DraftKings Sportsbook in Great Cedar has an LED screen 50 feet by 30 feet, which is hard to miss.
Four Casinos Under One Roof
The Grand Pequot Casino holds Club Newport, with 35 high-limit Table Games. Great Cedar Casino has the PLAY Arena, where you play four live tables at once, and The Fox Tower Casino has Centrale, which Foxwoods bills as the most energetic casino bar in Connecticut. Pequot Woodlands is the newest floor, with over 430 slot machines, the 40-seat Truth slot bar, 24 tables and its own high-limit slot room.
Bingo, Rooms and Shows
The High Stakes Bingo Hall has more than 2,200 seats over 30,000 square feet, and you only need to be 18 to play it. Foxwoods has more than 1,900 hotel rooms across three towers: the 14-story Grand Pequot Tower, a AAA Four Diamond hotel, the 317-room Great Cedar Hotel and The Fox Tower, which opened in 2008 as the MGM Grand at Foxwoods and took its current name in 2013. The Two Trees Inn adds 280 more.
The Premier Theater seats 4,000, Tanger Outlets is part of the resort, and Great Wolf Lodge Mashantucket gives families a water park on the same trip. I’d book Foxwoods for a two-night trip with people who don’t all gamble, because there is simply more to do between sessions.
Mohegan Sun vs Foxwoods: Which Should You Visit?
Mohegan Sun is the better casino and Foxwoods is the bigger resort, and that’s the honest short answer. The two are close enough to visit both in one day, so plenty of people do exactly that.
Mohegan Sun vs Foxwoods for Gaming
By the state’s count, Mohegan Sun ran more slot machines than Foxwoods in August 2023, and it lists roughly 300 tables against 175. It also pays the state more. In the fiscal year to June 2025, the Mohegan Tribe paid $124.5 million from its slot win against $90.4 million from the Mashantucket Pequots, so Mohegan Sun’s machines take in a lot more money. Foxwoods’ Slots paid back slightly more, 92.03% against 91.71% that August, which is a small edge, but it is a real one if Slots are your game.
How Far Apart Are Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun?
They’re about 15 minutes apart by car, Foxwoods in Mashantucket and Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, both a short drive from Norwich. I’d stay at Foxwoods, play the tables at Mohegan Sun and catch whichever show is better that weekend.
But keep your cards straight. Foxwoods Rewards and Momentum are separate programs run by different tribes, so a night on the Mohegan Sun floor does nothing for your Foxwoods tier, and I’d pick one resort as your main loyalty home and treat the other as the place you visit for a change of scene.
Which Is the Biggest Casino in Connecticut?
The biggest casino in Connecticut depends on how you measure it. On the gaming floor, it’s Mohegan Sun, with 3,525 machines in operation to Foxwoods’ 3,384 by the state’s August 2023 figures and about 300 tables to 175. On hotel rooms and total size, it’s Foxwoods, with more than 1,900 rooms against Mohegan Sun’s 1,563, which is why you’ll see both resorts called the biggest casino in Connecticut depending on who is doing the measuring and what they chose to count.
The Numbers You’ll See Elsewhere
Plenty of lists quote slot counts nobody backs up. You’ll see Foxwoods credited with 7,000 slot machines and 400 tables on a state tourism page, or 5,500-plus Slots and 250 tables on travel blogs, when the resort itself lists over 3,200 and 175. Mohegan Sun gets 6,500 Slots and 370 or more tables, and one trip site gives the two resorts 4,200 and 4,800 machines.
Even the casinos disagree with themselves. Mohegan Sun’s gaming FAQ still says nearly 5,000 slot machines while its main casino page says nearly 4,000, and the Foxwoods FAQ says over 3,400 against 3,200 elsewhere on its site. I trust the state’s monthly reports over any of them, because those count the machines that were actually switched on. If you want to know why the house keeps winning either way, read how casinos make money.
Casinos Near Hartford, New Haven and the Rest of Connecticut
Both casinos are in New London County, in the southeast corner of the state, so the best casinos in Connecticut are a drive for almost everyone who lives there. Mohegan Sun says it’s within 45 minutes of Providence, Hartford and New Haven, just over 90 minutes from Boston and just over 2 hours from New York, with more than 13,000 parking spaces when you get there.
Is There a Casino in Hartford?
No. There’s no casino in Hartford, New Haven, Danbury or Stamford, because Connecticut has just the two tribal casinos. Hartford’s Bradley International Airport is about 60 miles from Foxwoods, and Mohegan Sun puts Hartford inside a 45-minute drive.
Can You Get There Without a Car?
The New London station is 20 minutes from Mohegan Sun, served by Amtrak and Shore Line East. Flying in, T.F. Green in Providence is about 41 miles from Foxwoods and Boston Logan is about 100. I’d rent a car anyway, because hopping between the two resorts is half the fun, and with your own wheels you can have dinner at one casino and still be at a table in the other before the late crowd arrives.
Casinos Just Over the Connecticut Line
If you live near a border, three casinos just over the state line are worth knowing about. None of them is in Connecticut, so they sit outside the rankings on this page, but if you live up near the Massachusetts line or out by Rhode Island, one of them can be a shorter drive than either resort in the southeast of your own state.
MGM Springfield, Massachusetts
MGM Springfield opened on August 24, 2018 at One MGM Way in downtown Springfield, Massachusetts. If you live north of Hartford, it’s the big-name casino I’d check before driving southeast.
Encore Boston Harbor, Massachusetts
Wynn’s Encore Boston Harbor opened on June 23, 2019 at One Broadway in Everett, just outside Boston, and lists 2,700-plus Slots and 175-plus Table Games. You have to be 21 to set foot on the floor.
Bally’s Lincoln, Rhode Island
Bally’s Lincoln Casino Resort is just minutes from Providence, so it’s worth a look if you live near the Rhode Island line. See our Rhode Island gambling guide for what’s legal there.
Rules for a Night at a Connecticut Casino
Walking into a Connecticut casino is easy, but the age rule is strict. You must be 21 for the casino floor at both resorts, and Mohegan Sun says underage gamblers found on the floor face ejection or arrest.
How Old Do You Have to Be?
Foxwoods has two quirks worth knowing. Bingo is 18 and over, and on the day you turn 21 you can’t walk onto the casino floor until 6 a.m. Bring a permanent, unexpired photo ID with your date of birth on it, because a temporary ID won’t work and Foxwoods won’t combine two lesser IDs to make one.
Smoking, Hours and Rewards
Both resorts are non-smoking inside. Foxwoods has designated smoking areas and no smoking on the floors, and Mohegan Sun has outdoor smoking areas, the Clay Pipe Cigar Bar and a few smoking rooms in Sky Tower. Foxwoods’ Slots run 24/7 and Mohegan Sun’s sportsbook never closes, so you can turn up late after a concert or a long drive from New York and still find the machines running and a seat at the bar. Sign up for Foxwoods Rewards or Momentum before you play, because the card is how you earn comps.
Who Runs and Regulates Connecticut's Casinos
Connecticut’s casinos run on tribal land under the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, and each tribe has its own deal with the state. Those are the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal-State Compact of 1991 and the Mohegan compact of 1994, and only the two tribes can run slot machines as long as state law stays the same.
Who Oversees What
The tribal governments regulate their own floors. Foxwoods says the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Government oversees and regulates its gaming. The state’s Department of Consumer Protection handles online casinos, sports betting and the self-exclusion list, and it collects 25% of each casino’s slot win, which is the money the tribes agreed to pay the state in return for keeping the slot business to themselves. That came to $90.4 million from Foxwoods and $124.5 million from Mohegan Sun in the year to June 2025.
The DCP does police the online side hard. In 2025 it suspended High5Games, a licensed game supplier that also ran an unlicensed casino, after 1,100 Connecticut customers played there, 108 of them on the self-exclusion list. The US casino hub covers the other states that license online play.
Responsible Gambling
If gambling stops being fun, the Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling runs a free, confidential helpline at 1-888-789-7777, open 24 hours a day. Outside Connecticut, the National Problem Gambling Helpline is now 1-800-MY-RESET, or you can text 800GAM, and either line will point you to free counseling close to home and the call is free and confidential.
Self-Exclusion in Connecticut
You can join the state self-exclusion list for 1 year, 5 years or life, and a lifetime exclusion can’t be undone. It excludes you from legalized gaming in Connecticut, and each resort also runs its own Patron Voluntary Exclusion Application, so I’d fill in the Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun forms as well. The simplest tool of all is deciding what you’re willing to lose before you park the car, taking only that much cash inside and leaving the bank cards in the glove box, so that when it’s gone the night is over and you drive home. Our Responsible Gambling guide covers the rest.
