VGW founder Laurence Escalante bids for the remaining 30% of the company

Laurence Escalante, the driving force behind Virtual Gaming Worlds, is making a power move. The founder who helped pioneer the entire sweepstakes casino revolution, with flagship brands like Chumba Casino, LuckyLand Slots, and Global Poker, has launched a formal buyout bid to acquire the remaining 30% stake in VGW he doesn’t already own.

If he pulls it off, he’s moving VGW offshore. Escalante revealed plans to relocate the whole operation from Australia to Guernsey. That’s not the only twist: shareholders have been offered equity in a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) controlled by Escalante himself, and the deal would be financed by a loan from VGW’s own coffers — a detail that’s already raising eyebrows in the Australian financial press.

Breaking Down the Numbers

According to the Australian Financial Review, VGW’s trio of sweeps giants is pulling in a combined $4.1 billion in annual revenue (AUD$6.13B). For the financial year ending June 2024, they reportedly generated $330 million in operating profit (AUD$491.6M).

Escalante’s offer? A valuation of $2.15 billion (AUD$3.2B) for the company and a price of $3.38 (AUD$5.05) per share for the remaining investors.

Industry Headwinds: Sweeps Casinos Under Siege

Escalante’s timing is bold, especially considering VGW is now at the heart of a regulatory firestorm. It’s one of the founding members of the Social Gaming Leadership Alliance, a new collective created to defend the sweeps casino model as lawmakers across the U.S. turn up the heat.

So far in 2025, Connecticut, Nevada, Louisiana, and Montana have passed laws effectively banning sweeps casinos, pending governor approval. Meanwhile, New Jersey, Ohio, Idaho, and several other states are actively considering similar bans. In total, over a dozen states have introduced legislation aimed at reining in, or outright killing, the sweepstakes casino model.

A Critical Moment for the Industry

It’s a tough landscape, but one VGW knows better than anyone. The company was the first to crack the code back in 2012, and Chumba Casino remains the category leader today. Despite the regulatory pushback, the sweeps casino market has exploded, with estimated 75% growth between 2019 and 2024, and projections putting 2025 revenue near $11 billion.

Escalante is going all-in. The founder believes that, even in the face of state-level bans and legislative battles, the sweeps model still has a winning hand. He’s betting that with full control, streamlined operations, and a new offshore base, VGW can adapt and thrive.
