Hollywood star Tobey Maguire took the stand Wednesday in the federal tax evasion trial of Tom Goldstein, offering a rare glimpse into the ultra-high-stakes poker world where Supreme Court litigators and A-list celebrities trade pots worth millions.

Maguire, looking far removed from the red carpets of Cannes, testified in federal court in Greenbelt, Md., that he paid Goldstein $500,000 in legal fees to chase down a massive gambling debt. The actor revealed he had hired the high-flying Washington lawyer to recover over $7 million from Texas banking billionaire Andy Beal following a series of heads-up matches in December 2019.

Prosecutors allege Goldstein used Maguire’s fees, along with millions of dollars in unreported gambling winnings, to cover his own mounting poker losses instead of reporting the income to the Internal Revenue Service.

For Goldstein the stakes have never been higher. If he’s convicted of criminal tax evasion, then he faces disgrace and disbarment. He announced his retirement from Supreme Court practice in 2023, but an official conviction will almost certainly result in him losing his place on the bar and his legal license.  If that happens, there’s no way back into the high-flying legal career that saw him argue 45 cases in the Supreme Court and teach at Harvard Law School.

“Player X” Reputation Resurfaces

Maguire’s appearance revived longstanding interest in his reputation within high-stakes poker circles.

For years, Maguire has been widely identified as the real-life inspiration for “Player X” in Molly’s Game, the memoir and subsequent film written by former underground poker host Molly Bloom. The character is portrayed as a dominant and psychologically aggressive player who derives satisfaction from humiliating opponents.

In her book, Bloom described Maguire as the strongest player in her games but also one of the most difficult personalities. She recounted an incident in which Maguire allegedly demanded she bark like a seal to earn a $1,000 chip, a claim Maguire has never publicly admitted.

Maguire’s testimony confirmed that he continues to play at the highest stakes. Beal, a billionaire mathematician and seasoned poker enthusiast, has long been known for challenging top professionals in private games. His matches with elite players were chronicled in The Professor, the Banker, and the Suicide King.

Maguire was the ringleader of the exclusive, high-stakes games, often held in the VIP rooms of upscale hotels or the backroom of the Viper Room in Los Angeles. He brought in close friend Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Macauley Culkin, because their presence was another lure for the gambling whales that the Spiderman star was hunting.

Goldstein’s Gambling Arc

Maguire testified that he met Goldstein through elite poker circles, where the lawyer had developed a reputation as both a prolific Supreme Court advocate and an aggressive gambler. Goldstein has argued more than 40 cases before the US. Supreme Court.

According to prosecutors, Goldstein experienced a major winning streak in 2016, allegedly earning tens of millions of dollars in heads-up poker games, including a reported $26 million win in a single Beverly Hills session.

The government claims Goldstein’s fortunes later reversed. By 2017, he was allegedly $16 million in debt to a California businessman. An indictment unsealed in January 2025 charges Goldstein with wilfully evading $5.3 million in federal taxes and misappropriating funds from his law firm, Goldstein & Russell, to finance gambling activity.

Defense Pushback

Goldstein has pleaded not guilty. His defense team argues the discrepancies cited by prosecutors stem from disorganized recordkeeping associated with high-stakes gambling rather than intentional tax evasion. They maintain that any failures to report income were unintentional.

Jurors are now tasked with determining whether the evidence reflects criminal conduct or financial mismanagement. As testimony continues, the case has drawn attention for its unusual intersection of Hollywood figures, elite legal practice, and private high-stakes gambling.
