Las Vegas icons Siegfried & Roy are set for a high-profile return to the limelight, more than 20 years after their final curtain call. As Apple TV+ gears up for its highly anticipated miniseries Wild Things, starring Jude Law as Siegfried Fischbacher and Andrew Garfield as Roy Horn, the world is once again turning its eyes toward the duo that redefined the “spectacle.”

The Emperors of the Strip

At the height of their fame in the 1980s and 90s, Siegfried & Roy were two of the biggest names in showbusiness. When they signed a $57.5 million lifetime contract with Steve Wynn to headline the Mirage, it set a new record as the largest contract in the history of live entertainment.

The pair and their tigers performed to sold out crowds of 1,500 people twice a night, six nights a week and more than 10.5 million people attended The Mirage shows. That brought in more than $1 billion in ticket sales alone.

Beyond the desert, they were icons of 80s excess and Teutonic kitsch. They appeared on over 200 television shows worldwide, and their likenesses were immortalized in everything from The Simpsons to their own animated series, Father of the Pride.

Of course it all came to an end on October 3 2003, when Montecore attacked Roy on stage, but before then the pair were two of the biggest celebrities in the world.

Roy passed away in 2020 and Siegfried died in 2021, but now the pair will make a comeback of sorts.

A Legacy Set in Bronze

While the Mirage is currently being transformed into the Hard Rock Las Vegas, the duo’s physical legacy has found a new home. On April 24, the Neon Museum will host a “Vegas Voices” event to re-unveil the legendary 17-foot bronze statue of the pair.

The sculpture, featuring their busts peering over a white tiger, was a landmark in front of the Mirage for 30 years. Its relocation to the museum marks a shift from active attraction to historical treasure, especially as modern sensibilities move away from using captive animals for entertainment.

The upcoming Apple series aims to look behind the sequins and tigers to explore the complex relationship between the two men who, for a time, were the undisputed kings of the entertainment world.
