Former NBA Player Malik Beasley Agrees to Plead Guilty in Sports Betting Scandal

Former NBA player Malik Beasley has agreed to plead guilty in a federal sports betting case involving allegations that he manipulated his performances during professional basketball games to benefit gamblers.

The 29-year-old, who spent nine seasons in the NBA, is scheduled to formally change his plea during a court hearing in New York on December 9.

Beasley initially pleaded not guilty to four federal charges, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, bribery in sporting contests, conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Although both sides have confirmed that a plea agreement is in place, the specific terms have not been disclosed.

A spokesperson for the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, based in Brooklyn, acknowledged the agreement but declined to provide further details.

The NBA has also responded to the development, confirming that it is following the legal proceedings.

“We are aware of the recent report regarding Malik Beasley and will be monitoring the proceeding,” a league spokesperson said.

Prosecutors Allege Beasley Manipulated NBA Game Statistics

The federal investigation centres on allegations that Beasley worked with sports bettors to influence his individual statistics during at least four NBA games in the 2023-24 season.

At the time, Beasley was playing for the Milwaukee Bucks.

According to the indictment, prosecutors believe the former NBA guard became involved in the scheme after accumulating gambling losses worth millions of dollars.

Investigators allege that Beasley coordinated with individuals placing wagers on his performances, potentially allowing them to profit from betting markets linked to his in-game statistics.

Multiple Defendants Move Towards Guilty Pleas

Beasley is not the only defendant in the investigation to reach an agreement with federal prosecutors.

The allegations form part of a wider federal prosecution involving six defendants, including former professional basketball personnel and individuals connected to sports betting.

An attorney representing Ernesto Plascencia, another individual charged in the case, confirmed on Saturday that his client also intends to plead guilty.

William Brown, a fellow defendant, entered a guilty plea earlier this month.

Another sports bettor named in the indictment, Robert Gorodetsky, is scheduled to formally plead guilty on November 20.

Meanwhile, former NBA player Ed Davis and his former agent, Paolo Zamorano, have maintained their not-guilty pleas.

With several defendants now preparing to admit guilt, the proceedings are moving towards a series of plea hearings rather than a single trial involving all six individuals.

NBA Monitoring Developments in Betting Investigation

The case adds to ongoing concerns about the integrity of professional basketball and the potential influence of sports betting on individual player performances.

Prosecutors allege that the scheme involved manipulating statistics that could affect the outcomes of wagers placed on specific player achievements.

Such allegations raise questions about the vulnerability of player proposition betting markets, where wagers are settled according to individual statistics rather than the final result of a game.

The NBA has confirmed that it is monitoring Beasley’s case but has not announced any further action in response to the reported plea agreement.

Beasley’s next scheduled appearance on December 9 in New York is expected to provide further clarity about the charges covered by his agreement with prosecutors.

Until the plea is formally entered and accepted by the court, the case against Beasley remains pending.
