How Does Provably Fair Gaming Work?
Every bet at an online casino comes down to one question, which is whether you can trust the result. Provably fair gaming answers it with math instead of a promise. Before you bet, the casino commits to a secret number by showing you its fingerprint, and afterward it gives you everything you need to check the result yourself.

What is Provably Fair Gambling?
Provably fair is a way of using cryptographic hashing to prove that a game result was fixed before you bet and wasn’t changed afterward. It doesn’t need a blockchain. The hashing runs on the casino’s own server, and the proof is a string you can check anywhere.
After each round you can audit the result from the data the casino gives you, so there is no point cheating on a single bet, because any change would show up in the check.
The idea goes back to SatoshiDice, a Bitcoin dice game launched in 2012 that was provably fair from the start. Today crypto casinos such as Stake and Bitcasino run it on their own in-house games. In short, a normal RNG asks for faith, and provably fair gives you a receipt.
How Does Provably Fair Work?
Provably fair uses cryptography to lock in the result before you place a bet, so nobody can change it afterward.
It combines three key inputs, plus a fourth that some games need:
- Server seed: a secret random string the casino generates. You only see its SHA-256 hash until the seed is rotated.
- Client seed: your contribution, a string your browser makes for you or one you type in yourself.
- Nonce: a counter that goes up by one with every bet, like a serial number.
- Cursor: used when a game needs more random numbers than one hash can supply, such as a shuffled deck.
How Does Provably Fair Gaming Work in Complex Games?
That setup is enough for Dice, Crash and Roulette, where each round has one outcome. Card games are harder, yet provably fair Blackjack exists now too. So how do they do it?
The whole shuffled deck is fixed and logged before you make a decision, so every card can be traced back to the first one dealt.
Before You Play
1. Shuffling the Deck or Multiple Decks
The casino’s server seed, your client seed and the nonce are hashed together to produce the shuffle, and the deck order is fixed from that point.
2. Hash Commitment
Before the hand, the casino shows you the server seed’s hash, its commitment to that exact deck order. From then on, changing the order would break the hash.
After You Play
3. Game Play
You play the hand as normal. Your decisions change which cards you take, but not the deck order, which is what the proof covers.
4. Post Game Verification
When the seed is revealed, you combine it with your client seed and nonce to rebuild the deck order. If it matches what you were dealt, the hand was fair.
A Worked Example: Checking One Dice Roll
Here’s the whole process with real numbers, so you can see there’s nothing hidden. I ran it with Python’s standard hmac and hashlib libraries, using the method Stake describes, which takes the HMAC-SHA256 of the server seed with the client seed, nonce and cursor, four bytes at a time, turned into a number between 0 and 1.

What the Example Proves
Change a single character of the client seed and the roll becomes 55.34. That’s the point. Once the casino has shown you the hash of its seed, it can’t steer the result, because it doesn’t know which client seed you’ll use, and you can’t steer it either, because you don’t know the server seed.
When you rotate your seed, the casino reveals the server seed. Hash it yourself, and if it matches the commitment you saw before betting, the seed was never touched. Every bet you placed with that pair can then be rebuilt, one nonce at a time.
The History of Provably Fair Games
SatoshiDice is widely regarded as the first provably fair game. It launched in 2012, and you simply picked a number and bet on whether the random result would come in higher or lower.
It became a smash hit. At one point SatoshiDice accounted for half of all Bitcoin transaction volume, and in 2013 it sold for $11.5 million worth of bitcoin. Could it have worked without provably fair tech? I doubt it, because it would have been so easy to rig.
BitZino, Just-Dice.com and PrimeDice followed, and the big crypto casinos went on to build whole ranges of provably fair Arcade games like crash, mines, coin flip and HiLo.

Provably fair has changed online gambling in ways few people expected. The crypto casino world has moved toward fast, simple games of pure chance that might not work without a way to prove them, and away from slower tables like Poker, Baccarat and Roulette.
Crash games like Spribe’s Aviator are the clearest example. A multiplier climbs until it crashes, you cash out before it does, and every round can be checked against a seed you were shown before it started.

Why Aren’t All Games Provably Fair?
If every game can be provably fair, why isn’t every game? Mostly it comes down to graphics and gameplay. Big-budget games run on a provider’s own servers, and bolting a verification layer onto them takes work.
Verification also adds extra processing, and a card game needs every step of the shuffle to be checkable, which can interrupt the flow of play.
Blockchain Is Optional
Most provably fair games don’t run on a blockchain at all, because the hashing happens on the casino’s server. Where developers do want games on-chain, network congestion and fees are real hurdles, and layer 2 networks for Ethereum and faster chains like Tron and Solana are the usual answers.
Where the Big Providers Stand
Most of the major game providers, including NetEnt, Pragmatic Play and Habanero, still rely on an audited, licensed Random Number Generator on their own servers.
Some providers go further, though. BGaming publishes its own provably fair method, hashing each result with SHA-256 before you bet and letting you add your own client seed.
Can Provably Fair Be Hacked?
Could someone hack provably fair? Breaking the hash itself isn’t realistic. SHA-256 has 2^256 possible outputs, a number 78 digits long, which is why nobody attacks the math.
The real risk is how a casino implements it. The Crypto Gambling Foundation warns that if a casino uses a new server seed and client seed pair for every bet, “ultimately the power of the result is in the operators control”, unless you check the pairing before each bet.
So check the basics. The hash should be shown before your first bet, you should be able to set your own client seed, and when you rotate the seed, the revealed value should hash to what you were shown. If any of that is missing, the game isn’t really provably fair.
