A well-known story is that, though the Ace of Spades gave rock star Cliff Burton a winning hand, this card also inadvertently led to his death. His position on the band’s tour bus caused him to unfortunately pass away in a traffic collision.

With this being the case, it’s perhaps not surprising that many bikers and rock and roll musicians adorn themselves with the Ace of Spades, via biker jackets or tattoos among others.

Interestingly, however, the card has an association with the military, if not directly with death, in popular culture.

As we mentioned earlier, the card was used in the Vietnam War to provide a much-needed morale boost to American soldiers. Consequently, the Ace of Spades has entered into mainstream use across various mediums. The most obvious example is the cult classic movie Apocalypse Now, where the card features prominently on several occasions. We love the smell of napalm fuel in the morning!

As a result, many people also associated the card with the war itself, even those who didn’t know of the superstition behind the soldiers’ use of it.

Interestingly, despite the connection with death, the Ace of Spades appears to have found its way into modern discourse as a good luck charm, as many military patches depicting the Ace of Spades are freely available for purchase in the United States.
