Blackjack is the best bet in the casino when you play it right, and the rules are simpler than the strategy charts make them look. You and the dealer each get two cards. The goal is to finish closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Beat the dealer and you win even money. Go over 21 and you bust, and the hand is gone.

Card values are easy. Number cards are face value, the picture cards are all worth 10, and an Ace is either 1 or 11, whichever helps your hand. A two-card 21, an Ace plus any 10, is a Blackjack, and it should pay 3 to 2.

On your turn you choose what to do:

• Hit: take another card.
• Stand: keep your total and pass to the dealer.
• Double down: double your bet for exactly one more card, best on strong totals like 10 or 11.
• Split: if you hold a pair, split it into two hands with a second matching bet.

The dealer has no choices. They follow a fixed rule, usually hitting until they reach 17 and then standing. Whether the dealer hits or stands on a soft 17 is the most important rule on the table, because hitting soft 17 nudges the house edge up in the casino’s favour. Check the table rules before you sit. At an iGaming Ontario casino those rules are published, regulated and audited, so what you read is what you get.

Here is what separates Blackjack from every other table game: your decisions actually change the odds. Play perfect basic strategy and the house edge drops to around 0.5%, the lowest of any game in the casino. Play on hunches and you hand the house several percent for free. Basic strategy is simply the mathematically correct move for every hand against every dealer upcard. It was solved decades ago. You don’t have to invent anything.

The moves that matter most

You don’t need the whole chart to play well. A handful of rules cover most hands:

• Always split Aces and 8s. Two Aces and a fresh pair of 8s are too good or too bad to leave as one hand.
• Never split 10s or 5s. A 20 is already a winner, and a pair of 5s is really a 10 you should be doubling.
• Double down on 11 against almost any dealer card, and on 10 unless the dealer shows a 10 or an Ace.
• Stand on hard 17 or higher. The bust risk isn’t worth the upside.
• Hit a hard 12 to 16 when the dealer shows 7 or higher, and stand when they show 2 to 6 and might bust themselves.

Decline insurance, every time

When the dealer shows an Ace they offer insurance, a side bet that they hold Blackjack. It sounds prudent. It’s a poor bet with a house edge over 7%, and basic strategy says decline it every single time, even with a strong hand. Wave it off and move on.

Find the 3:2 tables and skip 6:5

This one quietly costs players more than any strategy slip. A natural Blackjack should pay 3 to 2, so a $10 bet returns $15. Some tables pay 6 to 5, which returns only $12 on the same hand. That single rule change roughly triples the house edge. I check the payout printed on the table before I sit, and so should you. A perfect-strategy game on a 6:5 table is still a worse bet than an average game on a 3:2 table.

Card counting doesn’t work online

Counting genuinely beats a hand-dealt shoe, but it falls apart online. RNG tables shuffle every hand, and most live tables use a continuous shuffler or reshuffle long before the deck runs thin. Treat the count as a casino-floor skill, not an online one. Online, your entire edge comes from playing every hand correctly.

Classic Blackjack

The standard game, usually dealt from multiple decks with the dealer standing on 17. It’s the version to learn first, and basic strategy is built around it. Most RNG and live tables are a flavour of Classic.

Infinite Blackjack

An Evolution live table with unlimited seats, so you never wait for a spot. Everyone plays the same dealer hand. It runs a touch slower, but the no-queue convenience makes it one of the most popular live tables in Ontario.

Lightning Blackjack

Evolution’s high-volatility spin. You pay a fee on each hand, and random multipliers up to 25x can land on your winning hands. The base game is standard Blackjack, the multipliers are the gamble. Fun in short bursts, expensive over a long session.

Free Bet and Power Blackjack

Free Bet gives you free double-downs and splits on certain hands, balanced by a push when the dealer hits 22. Power Blackjack lets you double and triple on the first two cards. Both juice the action and both shift the maths, so read the payout rules before you commit real stakes.

Single Deck and European

Single Deck cuts the house edge on paper but often pays Blackjack at 6:5 to claw it back, so check first. European Blackjack deals the dealer’s second card only after you’ve played, which flips a few strategy calls. Both are common online and worth knowing before you sit.

You’ll play Blackjack online in one of two ways, and they suit different moods.

RNG Blackjack is software. A certified random number generator deals the cards, there is no dealer and no other players, and you set the pace. It’s fast, private, and the minimums are tiny, so it is perfect for drilling basic strategy without anyone watching or waiting on you.

Live Blackjack streams a real dealer from a studio in real time. On the Ontario panel that studio is almost always Evolution, which powers the live floors at BetMGM, LeoVegas, Caesars and the rest. You get real cards, a chat box and the rhythm of a shared table. The trade-off is a fixed pace and the odd wait for a seat, unless you’re on an Infinite table.

I tested the live feeds on desktop and a mid-range phone. They were sharp on wifi and held up on 4G, dropping resolution rather than freezing when the signal dipped.

Most live tables also dangle side bets like 21+3 and Perfect Pairs. They pay big and look tempting. They also carry a house edge several times higher than the main game, often above 5%. I treat them as the occasional dollar flutter, never a strategy. The whole point of Blackjack is the low edge on the base game, so don’t give it straight back on the side bets.

Here is the honest version: casino bonuses and Blackjack rarely mix well, and it pays to know why before you opt in.

Two things work against you. First, iGaming Ontario doesn’t let casinos advertise bonuses and free spins to the public, so you will not see the big flashing welcome offers players in other markets get. You only see what is on the table once you’ve registered. Second, and this is the killer, Blackjack barely counts toward wagering requirements. When a bonus says wager it 30 times, Slots contribute 100% while Blackjack often contributes just 10%, sometimes nothing. So a bonus you meant to clear at the table can be all but impossible to turn into cash.

There is a second reason casinos discount Blackjack: its low house edge. They’re not keen to attach a bonus to a game where a sharp player gives up only 0.5%, so the contribution gets capped or zeroed.

If Blackjack is your main game, I’d not pick a casino on its bonus at all. Choose it on variant range, table limits and 3:2 payouts.
