PlayNow is the BCLC’s online casino, sportsbook, poker and lottery product, all wrapped into a single account. It launched 15 July 2010, making it the first regulated online casino to go live in North America. The operator is the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, a provincial Crown body that has run BC’s gambling since 1985. The age requirement is 19, which matches every Canadian province except Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec.

The catalogue runs around 1,000 titles. Slots, table games, live dealer running on Evolution, video poker, bingo, plus the integrated sportsbook and a peer-to-peer poker room shared across BC and Manitoba. The slot wall sits behind a competitive iGO operator on raw count, but ahead of most monopoly provinces, with PlayAlberta clocking 700 titles and EspaceJeux around 750. The providers are mainstream: NetEnt, IGT, Bally’s, Pragmatic Play, Microgaming, Light & Wonder, plus a small in-house catalogue branded as BCLC originals.

The cashier is genuinely Canadian. Interac Online is the headline payment system with a $5 minimum, instant deposits, and Visa Direct sits alongside for card deposits. The Criminal Code of Canada, section 207, gives provincial governments authority to authorise gambling on Canadian soil. BC’s reading of that has been to retain authority as a Crown monopoly through the BCLC, and the province has shown no public appetite for a competitive marketplace. PlayNow has been the sole legal online casino since 2010 and there’s no scheduled transition that changes that, unlike Ontario in 2022 or Alberta on 13 July 2026.

Every other site advertising to BC players is offshore, operating under Kahnawake, Curaçao or Malta licensing. Playing offshore isn’t prosecuted against players in any practical enforcement sense, but you give up the BCLC consumer-protection framework when you go that route. For full provincial consumer protection, segregated player funds, BCLC dispute resolution and integration with the GameSense BC self-exclusion registry, PlayNow is the answer. The trade-off offshore is the usual one: bigger welcome bonuses, larger catalogues, crypto deposits, but the consumer-protection gap is real and you’re on your own if a withdrawal stalls.

PlayNow’s sign-up offer is a Match Bonus up to $100 on your first deposit. The bonus carries a 30x wagering requirement on the bonus amount, expires within 30 days, and is restricted to slots and selected table games. The wagering applies to the bonus amount only, not the deposit, which is friendlier than many competitive welcomes. Beyond the welcome, the ongoing calendar runs PlayNow Rewards, the only points-based loyalty programme on any Canadian provincial monopoly. Points accumulate on real-money play, convert to bonus credit or sportsbook free bets, and there are tier-based perks across four levels. It’s the closest thing any Canadian provincial monopoly offers to a US-heritage iGO operator’s loyalty programme. Weekly slot promotions, bingo-room bonus rounds and seasonal contests round out the calendar.

Maximum bet during active bonus wagering is $5 per spin, enforced at the bet-slip. Bonus winnings cap at $500, which is double PlayAlberta’s cap. Both are standard for BCLC-regulated promotions and tighter than typical offshore bonus terms.

I played across the slot wall, table games, live dealer and the bingo room over my three-week test window. Here’s where the catalogue lands.

Around 700 slot titles, sourced from NetEnt, IGT, Bally’s, Pragmatic Play, Microgaming, Light & Wonder and Red Tiger. The lobby filtering handles theme, volatility and bonus-feature presence cleanly. The lobby is the shared Evolution lobby you’d see on regulated sites across the world, with Lightning Roulette, Crazy Time, Live Blackjack at multiple stake levels, Live Baccarat and Monopoly Live. Seat availability is generally quick, even at weekend peak. Stream quality held up on fibre and on 5G mobile. There are no PlayNow-branded private tables, which would be nice for the brand size but doesn’t materially affect the experience.

Table Games, Bingo and Poker

RNG tables cover Blackjack across multiple variants, European and American Roulette, Baccarat and Casino Hold’em. The variant depth is broader than PlayAlberta’s and roughly level with BetMGM Ontario’s deep RNG-table catalogue. The bingo room runs daily at scheduled times with real-money tickets, and there’s a peer-to-peer poker room shared across BC and Manitoba that gives the player pool enough depth for reasonable cash-game traffic at 6pm to 11pm PT.

What’s missing: no progressive jackpot network beyond Mega Moolah and Major Millions, no crash games. The Aviator-style instant-bet products are excluded under BCLC regulator policy. But there IS sportsbook, unlike PlayAlberta which is casino-only. PlayNow integrates sports betting into the same login, with NHL, NBA, NFL, MLB and Premier League at competitive odds.

Interac Online is the default Canadian banking system at PlayNow and the one I’d default to. Interac deposits are instant. Visa Direct and Mastercard are available for card deposits at $5 minimum each, with no card-deposit fees. Online bank transfer is the slow fallback at 3 to 5 business days for larger sums.

What’s not there: PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, e-wallets, prepaid cards aside from gift cards routed through Visa Direct. PayPal in particular is a real gap if you’re used to FanDuel or BetMGM Ontario where the method is supported. The BCLC has shown no public movement on adding e-wallets, which matches the broader pattern of provincial monopolies sticking to direct banking methods.

Withdrawal speeds: Interac withdrawals run to the published 24 to 48 hour target. PlayNow’s published target is 24 to 48 hours. Visa Direct settles in 1 to 3 business days. Withdrawal limits are $9,999 per transaction and $100,000 per week, the most generous weekly cap among Canadian provincial monopolies. KYC verification runs at signup, so first-withdrawal friction is rare.

PlayNow ships native iOS and Android apps. This is a real selling point against PlayAlberta and EspaceJeux, both of which run progressive web apps only. The iOS app is on the App Store, the Android app comes via direct APK download from playnow.com because the Google Play Store still restricts gambling apps in Canada. Both apps include biometric login, push notifications, in-app deposits and dark mode.

PlayNow ships native iOS and Android apps, and both launch quickly with slots loading in a few seconds. Live dealer streams held up at 5G or fibre quality. Session-resume after a phone lock returned to the lobby cleanly without re-running geolocation prompts mid-session, which is the kind of native-app advantage you don’t get from a PWA.

The Geocomply geolocation check runs once at session start. On the native app it’s seamless because the location service runs in the background. On the PWA progressive-web-app version, which is the fallback if you don’t install the native app, the prompt is more visible. I’d default to the native app if you’re on mobile because the experience is materially smoother.

PlayNow runs live chat 24/7. Live chat waits are short outside peak hours, stretching a little on Friday evenings. There’s also a 1-866-815-0222 toll-free phone line, available 24/7, and email support with a same-day response SLA. The 24/7 chat puts BCLC ahead of every other Canadian provincial monopoly and on par with the leading iGO operators like Bet365 Ontario and PokerStars Casino Ontario.

Identity verification at signup runs through Equifax. Verification usually clears in seconds. If the automated check can’t confirm you, the fallback is a document upload with photo ID plus a recent utility bill, usually clearing within 24 hours. KYC is mandatory before your first withdrawal, which is why the cashier hasn’t held up any of my withdrawals. Verification was complete on day one.

On security: PlayNow runs TLS 1.3, bcrypt password storage, optional two-factor authentication via SMS or authenticator app, and session timeout after 30 minutes of inactivity. Standard regulated stack with one small upgrade over PlayAlberta: two-factor is opt-in but actively prompted at signup, which nudges more players to turn it on. I’d still recommend turning it on before depositing anything meaningful.

A note on the offshore-vs-regulated question through the RG lens: provincial self-exclusion does not transfer to offshore sites. If you self-exclude from PlayNow, an offshore Curaçao casino has no way to know and will accept your signup. That’s the strongest argument for staying on the regulated provincial site if RG matters to you. GameSense BC is one of the most mature provincial RG programmes in Canada, and the integration with PlayNow is genuinely useful rather than tokenistic.

BC players see heavy offshore advertising, particularly post the Bill C-218 single-event-sports-betting reforms in 2021. Offshore sites fall under one of three licensing regimes. Kahnawake is the strongest of the offshore regulators, operating from Canadian soil under Mohawk sovereignty. Curaçao is the most common offshore licence, now in post-reform mode after the 2024-26 GCB reform tightened standards. Malta is the strictest European standard but increasingly geo-blocks Canada to comply with provincial regulator pressure.

The honest framing: offshore sites work. They have real games, and real payouts. But you give up provincial regulator protection. There’s no BCLC dispute resolution, no integration with the GameSense BC self-exclusion registry, no segregated-player-fund guarantee. They’ll usually offer bigger welcome bonuses, larger game catalogues and crypto deposits, but the consumer-protection gap is real.

I’d open a PlayNow account tomorrow if I were starting fresh in BC today. It’s the only legal online casino in the province, BCLC consumer protections are real, with segregated player funds, GameSense BC integration and provincial dispute resolution backing every account, the cashier holds Canadian-bank-friendly methods with sub-24-hour Interac withdrawals in my testing, and the native iOS and Android apps make this the strongest mobile experience among Canadian provincial monopolies.

Where it falls short: no PayPal or e-wallets at the cashier, the welcome at $100 match is modest by competitive iGO standards, and the slot library at 700 titles trails BetMGM Ontario’s 900-plus and PartyCasino’s 2,000-plus. There’s no traditional VIP tier ladder, although PlayNow Rewards is closer to a real loyalty programme than any other Canadian provincial monopoly offers. The integrated sportsbook is competitive on Canadian leagues but the casino-side bonus calendar is thinner than what BetMGM Ontario runs.

Honestly, for my money PlayNow is the right pick if you’re a BC resident who wants the regulated provincial option in 2026. The 24/7 live chat, native apps, $100K weekly withdrawal cap and Mega Moolah progressive network all push it ahead of the other Canadian provincial monopolies. Whether BC ever opens a competitive marketplace remains an open question, but for now this is your one option and it’s the strongest provincial monopoly product in the country.
