Andrej’s been around since day one. Let’s just say that he could get around an online casino blindfolded. That’s not to say that he does, he’s a perfectionist at heart. Fine print? There is none with Andrej.

The Wolf Hunters slot is played on a grid of 5 reels and 3 rows with 20 paylines in place. It was released by Yggdrasil in September 2018, so is a relatively recent addition to their catalogue of games. As you might expect, it can be played on mobile devices with no effect on the overall quality, partly thanks to its use of HTML5 technology. Apple, Android and Windows mobile devices are all compatible with the game. If you prefer to play the game on your desktop, then it works with Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Edge browsers.
The bet values that you can choose in the game range from 0.005 coins right up to 5 coins. This usually works at as 10p and £100 for UK players, though there may well be a little variety in those figures depending upon which online casino you use. The maximum win at most operators is 3,000x your stake or £250,000, whichever occurs first.
The Wolf Hunters slot has an RTP of 96.30%, which puts it into a pretty typical range. Many Yggdrasil slots have a similar RTP to this, although their games do vary quite considerably. Other slots from the developer with the same RTP rate include Beauty and the Beast, Cyrus the Virus and Dark Joker Rizes. The Wolf Hunters game has medium to high variance, which is useful to know if you like to base your slots strategy on this kind of thing.
Another useful feature to the game is something that it shares with almost all Yggdrasil slots. If you click on the cross in the bottom left corner of the screen during play then you can access a very detailed help section. This includes a paytable, a payline structure and plenty of detail about how the slot’s bonus features work. We were impressed with the amount of detail on offer here.
The reels in the Wolf Hunters slot game are set in front of an ornate and highly detailed backdrop. The reels are framed by an ornate gothic gateway that stands in front of a similarly ornate city scene. The colours are a rainy shade of grey coupled with a sickly yellow glow that comes from gas street lamps. There is plenty of detail which helps to create a very immersive atmosphere.
The game boats an impressively dramatic musical theme, and there are some satisfyingly detailed other sound effects too. These contribute to the immersive atmosphere too, though the music may become a little wearing if you are playing the game for a long session. Overall, the sounds and appearance of the game are very reminiscent of a contemporary video game, and Yggdrasil deserve plenty of credit for them.
On the left side of the reels stands a male figure in a top hat, on the right stands a woman. These are the two Wolf Hunters. Immediately underneath these tow figures you will see ‘rage meters’. These play a part in the game’s bonus features, something we’ll take a closer look at later in this review. The symbols on the reels are pretty detailed. The higher value symbols are items such as a silver dagger, a man trap and a vial of poison – the kind of things that you would carry if you were going out hunting werewolves.
The lower value symbols are playing card symbols in red, purple, green and blue. The higher value symbols are backed by illuminating shades in the same colour. The colours are the garish, chemical shades that you would expect to see in a mad scientist’s laboratory. You need to watch out for the werewolf symbol, as this plays a part in the feature. The wild symbol is the word ‘wild’ so it is easy to spot.
If you are a seasoned slots gamer you are probably well aware that Yggdrasil slots tend to be packed with a variety of bonus features. The Wolf Hunters fruit machine is no different in this regard.
On each spin where a wild symbol spins in, a respin is triggered where all the wilds become sticky. This includes all wilds that are generated by the two hunters wining their fights with the werewolf. If all the reels fill with wilds, no more free spins are awarded.
When the werewolf symbol lands on the reels, one of the two hunters on either side of the reels will attack it. Every time they manage to hit the werewolf, its health is decreased by a point. When it reaches 0, the Slayer Free Spins are triggered. You can read about those below.
Each time either of the two hunters manages to hit the werewolf, they are awarded points in their rage meters. When either of the hunters hits 100 rage points, their own particular version of the free spins feature is triggered. If you are playing the game for the very first time, one hunter will be awarded 70 points and one 30.
You trigger the standard free spins feature by landing 2 bonus symbols on the reels. You receive an initial 10 free spins and can trigger more by landing more bonus symbols on the reels. In addition to the standard free spins, though, you can also trigger two improved versions.
You can also upgrade the free spins. If you collect 3 of the male hunter symbols, you are awarded 2 extra spins. The male hunter is also upgraded so that if he fights with the werewolf and hits it successfully, the werewolf symbol turns into a wild that expands to take up the space to its left. All male hunter bonus symbols are then removed from the reels for the free spins.
If you land 3 female hunter bonus symbols then you are again awarded 2 extra free spins. If the female hunter hits the werewolf, the werewolf symbol turns into a wild that expands up and down by 1 reel position. All female hunter symbols are removed from the reels.
Hunter Free Spins are triggered when either of the hunters’ rage meters hits 100. This will give you 10 free spins. You cannot collect any more bonus symbols during these spins.
Slayer Free Spins are triggered when the werewolf’s health reaches 0 after it is attacked by the hunters. All werewolf symbols are replaced with expanding wilds during these spins. You receive 10 free spins and cannot trigger any more as there are no bonus symbols on the reels. You also cannot collect any rage points during these spins. The werewolf’s health is reset once its life force has been reduced to 0.
This Wolf Hunters slot review is going to end on a very positive note indeed. We really enjoyed playing and reviewing this slot. It is rare that a game has so much variety in its selection of bonus features, and we found plenty of entertainment in all of them. The sound and graphics are excellent too, and you’re sure to find yourself being absorbed by this game’s gothic atmosphere.
If you enjoy games based on a horror theme, you might also want to try Vampires vs Wolves from Pragmatic Play or Werewolf Wild from NextGen Gaming.
