We were less than blown away by the visuals in this slot. The background is a relatively accurate line-art rendering of the gameshow’s set, though it begs the obvious question: why not just use a photo of the set?

The symbols are all designed to look like they’re made of a shiny, polished, 3D, crystalline material, but this just ends up making them look more than a little cheap. The Wild symbol is just an example of lazy design. It’s a spinning disc of rainbow colours with a big question mark and the word “Wild” on it. In some ways, it feels like playing a spinning version of Bejewelled, the browser game that was all the rage back in 2009.

The soundtrack is pretty accurate to the tracks used on the original gameshow, with some “slot” noises added in, and we honestly can’t complain about that at all. The soundtrack helped with the illusion that we were actually part of the show itself.

Symbols in the Slot

Like many other slots out there, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire features low paying symbols, high paying symbols, a wild, and a scatter. The low paying symbols are 9 to Ace, as in a deck of cards, and the high paying symbols are a number of gemstones (purple, red, blue, and green), each with their own distinctive shape and colour. 

The purple diamond is clearly the most profitable symbol, offering players 50 times their stake for filling all 6 slots of a payline. This is also the only symbol that can activate a payline with just two consecutive symbols in the first and second reels.

The Wild symbol, as described above, is colourful and distinctive, and substitutes all other symbols except for the scatter. The scatter symbol is the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire logo, and this activates the game’s bonus round.

An Extra Reel is placed horizontally under reels 2 to 5, giving players extra opportunities to complete paylines and helping reduce the volatility of the shifting reel sizes.

If a player answers a question incorrectly between rungs 2 and 6, or between rungs 7 and 11, then the safety net feature kicks in, guaranteeing 10 or 20 free spins depending on the safety net below the incorrectly answered question.
