Andrej’s been around since day one. Let’s just say that he could get around an online casino blindfolded. That’s not to say that he does, he’s a perfectionist at heart. Fine print? There is none with Andrej.

Released in 2018, this was Big Time Gaming’s first dip of the toe into licensed slots. The Who Wants to Be a Millionaire slot is based on the hit gameshow of the same name. Those who don’t have an encyclopedic amount of general knowledge on hand don’t need to worry, though, you don’t need to be a genius to get ahead. Big Time Gaming’s Who Wants to Be a Millionaire is a 6 reel slot that runs on the company’s Megaways™ engine. Players can wager between £0.20 and £100 on a single spin, making this game flexible enough that anyone from the most casual player to high rollers should be covered.
Big Time Gaming’s Who Wants to Be a Millionaire slot has an RTP of 96.27%, which is pretty average for Megaways™ slots, and above the general online slots average. This a slots game with extremely high volatility, as are most other Megaways™ slots. The fact that reels have a different number of symbols on them each spin makes it extremely unpredictable.
We were less than blown away by the visuals in this slot. The background is a relatively accurate line-art rendering of the gameshow’s set, though it begs the obvious question: why not just use a photo of the set?
The symbols are all designed to look like they’re made of a shiny, polished, 3D, crystalline material, but this just ends up making them look more than a little cheap. The Wild symbol is just an example of lazy design. It’s a spinning disc of rainbow colours with a big question mark and the word “Wild” on it. In some ways, it feels like playing a spinning version of Bejewelled, the browser game that was all the rage back in 2009.
The soundtrack is pretty accurate to the tracks used on the original gameshow, with some “slot” noises added in, and we honestly can’t complain about that at all. The soundtrack helped with the illusion that we were actually part of the show itself.
Like many other slots out there, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire features low paying symbols, high paying symbols, a wild, and a scatter. The low paying symbols are 9 to Ace, as in a deck of cards, and the high paying symbols are a number of gemstones (purple, red, blue, and green), each with their own distinctive shape and colour.
The purple diamond is clearly the most profitable symbol, offering players 50 times their stake for filling all 6 slots of a payline. This is also the only symbol that can activate a payline with just two consecutive symbols in the first and second reels.
The Wild symbol, as described above, is colourful and distinctive, and substitutes all other symbols except for the scatter. The scatter symbol is the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire logo, and this activates the game’s bonus round.
An Extra Reel is placed horizontally under reels 2 to 5, giving players extra opportunities to complete paylines and helping reduce the volatility of the shifting reel sizes.
As you can expect from a slot based on a game show, the bonus features on this slot are pretty exciting, in their own way. The tons of free spins you can accumulate are the main draw here, as well as how exactly you can get those free spins.
For starters, the bonus feature is activated when three Millionaire Scatters show up on the reels. Once that happens, players are transported to the iconic Hot Seat.
Just like on the TV show, players are put in the hot seat to try and increase their winnings, or in this case, free spins. There are up to 50 free spins up for grabs in the Hot Seat.
Players rise through the different rungs on the ladder by selecting one of four answers. Luckily for players, though, they don’t need to answer real questions, but instead select their answer based on three different features:
For every correct answer, the player moves a rung up the free spins ladder, just like how the Hot Seat works on the game show. Also similar to the game show are the safety net rungs on the ladder. Rungs 2, 7, and 12 are risk-free answers, guaranteeing 10, 20, and 50 free spins, respectively.
If a player answers a question incorrectly between rungs 2 and 6, or between rungs 7 and 11, then the safety net feature kicks in, guaranteeing 10 or 20 free spins depending on the safety net below the incorrectly answered question.
Once the free spins feature gets activated, it works similarly to slots like Thunderkick’s Esqueleto Explosivo or Big Time Gaming’s Bonanza in that each winning combination on the reels increases the multiplier.
Players can earn even more free spins here when Millionaire Scatters appear on the horizontal Extra Reel. 3 Scatters will net you an extra 4 free spins, and 4 Scatters will give you 8 extra free spins.
Big Time Gaming’s Who Wants to Be a Millionaire slot is the perfect slot experience for anyone who’s ever wanted to be on the show, but didn’t want to have to deal with the questions. While the visuals could be a little better, the soundtrack is great and an authentic nod the original show’s soundtrack. This, combined with the innovative bonus features create a truly immersive online slot experience.
As a slot running on the Megaways™ engine, the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire slot game is extremely volatile, though this also means that players can enjoy wins as large as 50,000x their stake! We definitely recommend trying it out for yourself and feeling the Chris Hanson experience.
