Nektan makes very basic games that are primarily intended to be played on mobile devices. This often means that the graphics and sound in their slots are somewhat limited in scope and detail. The same is true of the Mayan Marvels slot, which fits right into the typical Nektan template. We were a little bit more impressed with the sights and sounds in this game than in other Nektan games, though there is still not much to get excited about.
The reels are set in what looks like a stone frame in front of a crumbling jungle tomb. The wall of the tomb is falling apart to reveal a hoard of gold within. This creates the right feeling for the game, but is just detailed enough for you to feel truly immersed. The symbols on the reels float in front of this backdrop.
The symbols themselves are pretty detailed, and look quite impressive, though there aren’t many of them. The lower value symbols are numbers and letters. The higher value symbols are the carved heads of Mayan gods adorned with jewels. You’ll see one adorned with a ruby, one with an emerald and one with a sapphire. That is it, apart from the special symbols.
Look out for the Logo in the Mayan Marvels Slot Game!
These special symbols are easy to spot. The game’s wild is a Mayan mask with ‘Wild’ written on it. This can substitute for all other symbols to create winning combinations for you, apart from the free spins symbol. That is also easy to spot, as it is simply the word ‘Spins’. We’ll have a look at the free spins feature this triggers later on in this review. The Mayan Marvels logo is the game’s most valuable symbol.
The sound design of the game is also very basic. There are no real sound effects to create any kind of immersive atmosphere. A tune does play when the reels spin, but this is pretty harsh on the ears. It is some kind of panpipe, Mayan-inspired music that is really not worth using your headphones on. Like many other Nektan games, such as Mummy Gold, we were left wishing that they had not bothered with the music at all.
So, overall, this is a very basic looking game that has almost no sound effects. It certainly works well on your mobile device, but that’s because there really isn’t much detail to it.
